Blind Focus

PAt the age of 16 I  was diagnosed with keratoconus. This is a disease of the cornea, which causes the cornea to  thin out as it bulges.Back then in 1976, they used hard contact lenses to push the cornea back in shape.. At that time, the disease only affected my right eye. I was legally blind in my right eye until I put the hard contact lens in. It was like a miracle– I could see clearly!
But by the time I was 19, my Cornea bulged out so bad it would pop my contact off or the contact lens scratched and lacerated the courier because it no longer fit. I had my first cornea transplant at the age of 19. Again, to me this is nothing short of a miracle as I was able to see without the contact lens after the cornea healed.

Every day is like a miracle when I put my contact lens in. My first cornea transplant was 40 years ago. Over the years I had 5 cornea transplants in my left eye that failed leaving that eye  blind.

The years on my right cornea transplant has taken a toll. My vision is not real good due to scarring of the cornea. However, a special lens corrects the vision to near 20/25. Sometimes I don’t wear the contact due to the eye being sore. I can not read without the lens nor make out what is on the TV. But because the reason of my poor vision without the contact is cornea surface abnormalities I can see very good with a pair of “pinhole glasses.”

Pinhole glasses are like a regular pair of glasses except the lenses are of a black plastic material with strategically placed tiny pinholes. The eye with cornea scars and distortions

Sharpens and i can get laser focus as I find the one pinhole that blocks all the distractions out.

Sometimes my life is out of focus and distracted by the many projects or things I am doing or need to do, or by physical pain driving me nuts.. How about you? Are you ever distracted by the circumstances going on in your life? Problems? Financial, home, weather, relationships or even the crises going on around the world or maybe your backyard? There is one answer for all of our problems. The problems are complex but the answer is simple and powerful.

May we keep our life Laser Focus on
the Purpose we have in Christ

12 Therefore, since we have so great a cloud of witnesses surrounding us, let us also lay aside every encumbrance and the sin which so easily entangles us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, 2 [a]fixing our eyes on Jesus, the [b]author and perfecter of faith, who for the joy set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.

3 For consider Him who has endured such hostility by sinners against Himself, so that you will not grow weary [c]and lose heart.

Proverbs 4:25 – 27

Let your eyes look directly ahead

And let your [gaze be fixed straight in front of you.

26 Watch the path of your feet

And all your ways will be established.

27 Do not turn to the right nor to the left;

When I sense myself slipping down the overwhelming trail of thinking of all that is before me from medical issues to the crisis that are going on all over the world; it amazes me how powerful it is just to focus on Jesus and the truth that all these things that “bother” us are temporary. I know how tough it is to not try to figure things out and fix the broken things in our life and country. It is NOT what we are here for. We are here to be the Light in the dark world. The only way to do that is NOT by being like the world but by being like Jesus and as we fix our eyes on Him, He will show us The Way.

Sometimes we need to close our eyes to everything around us. Be blind to the world that we can focus on Jesus, trusting Him, the Author and Finisher of our faith. Keep your focus.

  1. Wow, Brenda, this piece is a powerful example of what happens when we are looking to Jesus so that our countenance is reflecting his glory to all around us.

    Absolutely beautiful!

    • Thank you Deborah for your encouraging and kind words. In this world,it seems I need to refocus on a daily basis as so many things in life are distracting from our main calling. Appreciate you and your insights!
